Dr Claire Nightingale – Consultant Orthodontist

Dr Claire Nightingale
Consultant Orthodontist
If you are looking for a skilled, professional, relaxed and friendly orthodontist (dental brace specialist) with good communication skills to treat you or your child, then read on!
I am both a Consultant and Specialist Orthodontist, with more than 20 years experience. I combine a part time NHS Consultant post in Orthodontics at Watford General Hospital with private practice in the heart of London’s West End. I thoroughly enjoy treating both children and adults, and use all types of orthodontic braces, including Invisalign and lingual braces (braces on the inside of teeth). I enjoy providing routine orthodontics and also working with a team of maxillofacial surgeons to correct patients with underlying jaw deformity.
I qualified as a dentist at Newcastle Dental School in 1989, and after spending a year in a prestigious House Officer post, I spent two years working as a junior maxillofacial surgeon in the South West, repairing people’s faces and extracting wisdom teeth! Then I returned to the gentler speciality of orthodontics, taking the MSc programme at Bristol University and training as a Senior Registrar at the renowned Eastman Dental Hospital. I have worked successfully in private practice for over 8 years and was appointed to my Consultant post in 2004. As a Consultant, in addition to treating patients, I train a junior orthodontist, referee academic papers for the European Journal of Orthodontics and the Journal of Orthodontics, Chair a local orthodontic group and lecture locally and nationally.
I have won several prizes during my career, including the Wisdom Dental Student Award, 1988, the Northern Branch British Dental Association Award, 1989, the Harry Orton Award, 1996 and the Belle Maudesley Prize, 2001. In 2000, I wrote a textbook, “Orthodontics – a Picture Test Atlas”, published by Butterworth – Heinemann, which won the Highly Commended Award for the Best Dental Textbook at the Annual Society of Authors Medical Book Awards in 2001. Additionally I have had several academic papers published in refereed journals such as the Journal of Orthodontics, the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dental Update and the European Journal of Orthodontics.
In my private life, I chase around after a husband, three young children and two cats. Occasionally I get to play the piano, sing jazz and enjoy a social life.
Testimonials
“To Claire, Thanks for everything you have done to my teeth and for making the visits to the orthodontist such a pleasure!”
Edd, aged 13
“Dear Claire, I just wanted to say thank you for giving me the support and having faith in me when I didn’t believe in myself. I am so pleased with the outcome of treatment, it has definitely been worth the wait. I admire the work that you do, especially your sense of humour (particularly when it comes to me having impressions!!). If I had any other doctor, I fear the outcome may have been very different. When I am discharged, it will be a chapter of my life finally closed, yet I will be sorry because I’ll also feel I will be losing a friend.”
Karen, aged 26
“Dear Claire, we cannot thank you enough for all your help with Lindsey. I think your kindness and approach is second to no one!!”
