Claire Nightingale qualified as a dentist with Honours from Newcastle University in 1989. She spent three years working in the Hospital Service, gaining a wide range of experience in general dentistry, orthodontics and oral and maxillo-facial surgery. In 1992 she graduated as a Fellow in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England before working in general dental practice. In 1996 she qualified as a Specalist in Orthodontics at Bristol Dental Hospital, gaining a Membership in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Scotland, and a Masters Degree from the University of Bristol. She then worked as a Senior Registrar at the Eastman Dental Department, London, and became accredited as a Consultant in Orthodontics in 2000.

She has won several prizes in her career, including: the Wisdom Dental Student Award,1988, the Northern Branch British Dental Association Award, 1989, the Harry Orton Award, 1996 and the Belle Maudesley prize, 2001. In 2000, Claire wrote a textbook “Orthodontics - a Picture Test Atlas” published by Butterworth-Heinemann, which won the Highly Commended Award for the Best Dental Textbook at the Annual Society of Authors Medical Book Awards in 2001. Additionally, she has had several academic papers published in refereed journals such as the Journal of orthodontics, the Journal of Oral and Maxillo-facial Surgery, Dental Update, and the European Journal of Orthodontics.

At convenient breaks in her career, Claire has enjoyed various backpacking adventures around the world and now leads a tamer life in London with her husband and son. Interests outside work include Music (playing the piano, clarinet and saxophone), dancing to swing music, going to the gym, and hanging out with friends and their children.
